Dear Friends,

I find the name ‘Lent’ a little odd for the 40 days of fasting, prayer and preparation leading up to Easter.  It seems to derive from an Old English word for spring having to do with ‘lengthier’ days. On the other hand, ‘Lent’ is a lot easier than ‘quadragesima’, which is the Latin expression.

Would it help if we thought of the word in the usual sense, as in “she lent me her car for the weekend”? We could see it as emphasizing the borrowed nature of human existence. We are living on borrowed time. Life is lent to us by God and we are required to give an account for how we have used it. That could give us pause for reflection and repentance.

Another option is using the word for an acronym. They are very popular these days. What about this – Living in Extraordinary Newness Together? The cross of Christ is the means whereby God puts an end to the old life of sin and selfishness. His resurrection empowers us to ‘walk in newness of life’ (Romans 6:4, 8:11). This is truly miraculous – and extraordinary. The ‘Together’ part emphasizes the communal nature of our faith. God has made us a family, also called ‘the body of Christ’ or simply ‘the church’. I realize that, clever as it may be, this acronym is not very catchy.

The first Sunday of the Lenten season is February 18th. We will celebrate our extraordinary new life together in Christ as we share in our Lord’s Supper at all three churches. Hope you will join us!

In Christ’s love,

Harry

“But we all, with uncovered face beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image, from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.” 2 Corinthians 3:18

Dear Friends,

It’s comforting to realize that in a shifting, changing world such as this our God does not change. “Jesus Christ is the same, yesterday, today and forever” (Hebrews 13:8). We, however, need changing, and this is what the Spirit of God is bringing about in our lives, changing us “from glory to glory”.  I have personally needed a lot of transforming and I know that our Lord has used the faithful believers of Ingoldsby, Lochlin and Haliburton United Churches to help make that happen. For your support, love, gifts, patience, prayers and encouragement over 25 years I give you my heartfelt thanks. It’s not easy to raise a minister.

Sometimes we are wringing our hands at the decline of church attendance and the loss of Christian influence in our society. That’s probably not a healthy (nor scriptural) way to look at things – except for the necessity of some lament. God is using this to bring about change in our attitudes and change in the way we ‘do church’. The gospel of Christ is still “the power of God for salvation to all who believe” (Romans 1:16). We are still “always being led in triumph in Christ” (2 Corinthians 2:14). Jesus continues to build his church and “the gates of Hades cannot stand against it” (Matthew 16:18). He is Lord “of the living and the dead” (Romans 14:9). He is at work in everyone we know because he is “the true light that gives light to everyone” (John 1:9). We have a lot on our side – like the power of the almighty God. The pages of this report for 2017 show forth the faithfulness of God as well as the struggles and hopes of his people – as well as some lament.

A notable change in the last year was the move of our local churches to work more together. Under the name ‘The Church in Haliburton’ we had 2 Music Nights, a Choir Night, a Light in the Darkness Christmas Service, Sizzlin’ Summer Service and an Earth Day event. It’s clear that Christ desires his body on earth to work together, not to compete with each other. The next Music Night is on February 28th at the High School (Pavilion) at 7 p.m.

Again, thanks to all who have contributed to these reports and the mission of our pastoral charge. A special thanks to Lynne Bertrand who rounds us up and puts it all together! And now, “Forgetting what lies behind, and reaching out to what lies ahead, we press on to win the prize of God’s high calling in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 3:13f [paraphrased])

In Christ’s love,

Harry
