“When the Counselor comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father, he will testify about me.”  John 15:26

Dear Friends,

A few years ago I heard a speaker who suggested that the ‘mainline’ churches focused on God the Father, the ‘evangelical’ churches on Jesus, the Son, and the ‘pentecostal’ churches on the Holy Spirit. I hope that we are, or will be, more balanced than that.  Pentecost is the yearly reminder and celebration of the Holy Spirit being ‘poured out’ on Jesus’ followers. As you can see from the above verse, he is sent by the Father and he points us to and teaches us about Jesus.

Jesus calls him the Counselor, which is an intriguing description of his work. In our day counselors help us with our emotional and mental issues and offer advice about relationships and lifestyle choices. The Counselor does this and much more. He dwells inside us, guiding our consciences and thoughts, encouraging, inspiring creativity, prayer and worship, illuminating Scripture and imparting to us the assurance of God’s love and acceptance through Christ. Paul tells us that “The Spirit bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God” Ro. 8:16 and “Where the Spirit of the Lord is there is liberty” 2 Cor. 3:17.

It would be impossible to over-emphasize the significance of the experience of the indwelling Holy Spirit. He is in each one who has put their trust in Jesus, and as we listen to him more and more his influence and presence grows. The Spirit leads us into community and unity in Christ. This is symbolized in our sharing of the Lord’s Supper, which we will be doing on Pentecost Sunday, June 4th. Hope you will join us.

In Christ’s love,

Harry
